Dad was there. I don't mean "there at my games or piano recitals" or whatever. That is NOT IMPORTANT. It's the most idiotic story every TV show and movie loves to dramatize but KIDS DON'T GIVE A P00P. Dad was there to guide me in what's important about being a man.

He worked two jobs for years and I never once heard him complain. I found out from Mom, decades later. That's the kind of man he was - the kind I'm still trying to be.

My dad learned to braid hair from a YouTube video when Mom was in the hospital. Three girls showed up to school every morning looking perfect. We never told her.

He kept every drawing I ever made him in a folder in his desk. I found it when we cleaned out his office. Forty years of scribbles, labeled by date.

Every time I back out of a driveway I hear him: mirrors, then over your shoulder. He's been gone six years and he still keeps me safe.

I'm 42 and I still call him when the car makes a weird noise. Half the time he just listens and says 'bring it over.' It was never about the car.

When I told him who I really was he went quiet for a minute. Then he said 'okay. pizza?' and that was that. Love you, Dad.

My stepdad never tried to replace anyone. He just kept showing up until 'Bill' turned into 'Dad.' Took me ten years to say it. He cried.

Taught me to fish, to shave, to apologize like a man, and to never walk past someone who needs help. In that order.

Dad showed up to every single game. We lost almost all of them. He cheered like we were winning the World Cup.
