My dad learned to braid hair from a YouTube video when Mom was in the hospital. Three girls showed up to school every morning looking perfect. We never told her.

He kept every drawing I ever made him in a folder in his desk. I found it when we cleaned out his office. Forty years of scribbles, labeled by date.

Every time I back out of a driveway I hear him: mirrors, then over your shoulder. He's been gone six years and he still keeps me safe.

I'm 42 and I still call him when the car makes a weird noise. Half the time he just listens and says 'bring it over.' It was never about the car.
